DramaBox: what it is, whether it's free and how to cancel
We make TotalShort, a short drama app: we say so wherever it matters. Facts about other apps come from their official App Store and Google Play pages and may change.
In short: DramaBox is a short drama app: vertical mini-series with episodes just a few minutes long, published by STORYMATRIX PTE. LTD. On the App Store it holds a 4.6 rating from about 13,500 ratings (Italian store, read on 30 September 2026) and is rated 17+. The app is free to download and some episodes are free to watch, but to keep going you generally need coins or an auto-renewing subscription, so for the most part it's a paid service. The interface is available in several languages; audio and subtitles depend on each series. You cancel through Apple or Google, not by deleting the app.
What is DramaBox?
DramaBox is one of the best-known apps for short dramas, also called micro-dramas or vertical dramas: series shot in portrait mode for your phone, with short episodes that each end on a cliffhanger. If the format is new to you, start with our explainer on what a short drama is.
In its official App Store listing, DramaBox says it releases new series every week, with episodes lasting a few minutes [1]. The catalog is large and leans into instantly recognizable genres: forbidden romance, revenge, contract marriages, hidden heirs. That's a genuine strength: if you want plenty of choice, you'll find it.
Who makes it and how it's rated
These figures come from the App Store listing (Italian storefront, read on 30 September 2026) [1]:
| Item | DramaBox |
|---|---|
| Developer | STORYMATRIX PTE. LTD |
| Average rating | 4.6 out of 5 |
| Number of ratings | about 13,500 |
| Age rating | 17+ |
| Localized interface | yes (including Italian) |
| Business model | free download, coins, auto-renewing subscription |
The 17+ age rating is the store's content guidance. If the app is going on a teenager's phone, it's worth keeping in mind.
How does DramaBox work?
It works the way most short drama apps do. You open the app, pick a series from the home screen and watch the first episodes. At some point the series stops and asks you to unlock the next episode.
According to the official descriptions of these apps, there are two main ways to unlock:
- Coins: you buy a coin pack through an in-app purchase and spend coins episode by episode.
- Subscription: you pay a recurring fee that renews automatically until you cancel, giving broader access to the catalog.
Apps in this category also offer free ways to keep watching, such as bonuses or ads, but what's available and how far it gets you varies between apps and changes over time. Check inside DramaBox itself.
How much do coins and subscriptions cost?
We don't list DramaBox prices: we haven't verified them, and they change over time, sometimes by country and by current promotion. The practical rule is simple: coin and subscription prices are shown in the app before you pay, in the Apple or Google purchase sheet. Always check the billing period (weekly, monthly, yearly) and whether it renews automatically.
Is DramaBox free?
The honest answer: partly. Downloading the app is free and some episodes cost nothing. But finishing a whole series usually takes coins or a subscription. If you're hoping for a completely free short drama app, you'll often hit a paywall halfway through the story.
Two things worth knowing when you search for "DramaBox free":
- Legal ways to watch for free do exist (opening episodes, bonuses, ads where offered), but they come with limits.
- Copies of these series uploaded to unofficial sites infringe the rights of the people who made them and can expose you to scams and malware. They're not worth the risk.
We've gathered the legal options in a separate guide: free short dramas.
What languages is DramaBox available in?
The app interface is localized, including an Italian version. But a localized app doesn't mean every series is dubbed. Many series on these platforms are American or Asian productions, and audio and subtitles need to be checked series by series.
Before spending coins on a series, watch the first episode and check the audio language and subtitle options.
How big is DramaBox? The market numbers
Short dramas have grown fast. According to Sensor Tower, short drama apps generated roughly $700 million in global in-app revenue in Q1 2025, almost four times Q1 2024 [2].
DramaBox is one of the biggest players:
| Metric (Sensor Tower, 2025) | DramaBox | ReelShort |
|---|---|---|
| In-app revenue, Q1 2025 | about $120 million | about $130 million |
| Cumulative revenue to March 2025 | about $450 million | about $490 million |
Over the same period the United States accounted for nearly $350 million, 49% of the category's global revenue [2]. If you're choosing between the two biggest apps, see our ReelShort vs DramaBox comparison.
DramaBox reviews: what users say
The verifiable figure is the store rating: 4.6 out of 5 from about 13,500 ratings on the Italian App Store [1]. That's a high score, and enough ratings for the average to be fairly stable.
We don't summarize individual reviews. You can read them, always up to date, on DramaBox's App Store page and on Google Play. A tip: sort by most recent and look for comments on pricing, renewals and series languages, the things that matter most before you pay.
How to cancel a DramaBox subscription
Subscriptions are managed by the store you subscribed through, not by the app. Deleting DramaBox does not cancel your subscription.
On iPhone and iPad
These are Apple's steps [3]:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select the DramaBox subscription.
- Tap Cancel Subscription.
If there's no cancel button, or an expiration date appears in red, the subscription is already cancelled.
On Android
These are Google Play's steps [4]:
- Open Google Play.
- Go to Subscriptions.
- Select the DramaBox subscription.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the instructions.
After cancelling, and refunds
Your subscription stays active until the end of the period you've already paid for, so you don't lose access right away. Refunds for in-app purchases are requested from Apple (at reportaproblem.apple.com) or from Google Play, not from the app. The full walkthrough, covering other apps too, is in our guide on how to cancel a short drama subscription.
An Italian alternative: TotalShort
To be upfront: TotalShort is our app, so we're not neutral. We include it as one option, with its strengths and its limits.
| DramaBox | TotalShort | |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog | large, new series every week | small: 4 series as of 30/09/2026 |
| Productions | live-action series from various countries | Italian series made with AI and labeled "AI Series" |
| Free | some episodes | first 8 episodes of every series, then 1 free episode per series per day |
| Payment | coins and subscription | coins (30 per episode) or VIP |
| Where to watch | app | browser at totalshort.com; iPhone and Android app coming soon |
TotalShort series are set in Italy, from Puglia to Milan to Ortigia, with episodes of about a minute. Newer series have both Italian and English audio. Coin packs start at 150 coins for €0.99 (first purchase only) and coins never expire; VIP costs €5.99 a week or €59.99 a year, with no free trial that quietly turns into a charge.
The real limit is the catalog: it has only just launched. To get a feel for it, start with episode one of The Ex-Wife or browse all series, right in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Is DramaBox free?
Downloading DramaBox is free and some episodes can be watched at no cost. To finish series, though, you usually need coins or an auto-renewing subscription. Apps like this also offer free ways to keep watching, such as bonuses or ads, but the limits and conditions change over time, so check in the app. Be wary of sites promising every series for free: unofficial copies infringe copyright and can expose you to scams.
Is DramaBox a subscription or pay per episode?
Both. The declared model is the usual one for short drama apps: episodes unlocked with coins, or a subscription that renews automatically until you cancel. We don't quote prices because they change over time and by country; you'll see them in the Apple or Google payment sheet before confirming any purchase.
