What is a short drama (micro-drama)?

In short: a short drama, also called a micro-drama, is a series made for your phone: vertical video, episodes of roughly one to two minutes, and a cliffhanger at the end of almost every one. The format started in China, where it is called duanju, and reached the US and Europe through apps like ReelShort and DramaBox. The first episodes are usually free; the rest are unlocked with coins, a subscription or by watching ads. According to Sensor Tower, short drama apps earned about $700 million worldwide in Q1 2025 alone [1].
What a short drama is
A short drama is scripted, serialized fiction shot (or generated) in 9:16 vertical format, the same shape as TikTok or Instagram Stories. You watch it one-handed, without turning your phone sideways. Each series is split into many very short episodes, often a minute or a little more.
You will see several names for the same thing: short drama, micro-drama, vertical drama, mini-series. The industry press tends to say "micro-drama"; the apps themselves mostly say "short drama". Same format, different label.
Compared with a regular TV series, three things change:
- length: an episode lasts about as long as a social video, not 45 minutes;
- framing: everything is composed vertically, with close-ups and few characters on screen;
- pace: there are no slow "filler" episodes; every installment needs an event and an open ending.
Where short dramas come from
The format began in China as duanju, literally "short dramas": vertical mini-series distributed on video platforms and dedicated apps [2]. Their success there pushed companies to export the same model to Western audiences, with stories written and produced for American and European viewers.
In the US the category took off with ReelShort and DramaBox, which are still the two biggest apps by revenue [1]. Their catalogs mix original productions with actors and many Asian series that are adapted or subtitled. From there the format spread to Europe, where the leading apps now ship localized interfaces.
How a short drama is built
Tiny episodes, constant cliffhangers
The genre has one core rule: every episode ends on a hook. A reveal, a door opening, a name spoken in the last second. In traditional TV the cliffhanger is saved for the season finale; here it comes every minute. That is why a series with dozens of episodes often gets watched in a single sitting, the way you scroll a feed.
Vertical, close-ups, few locations
Shooting in 9:16 changes the visual language: faces, reactions and two-person dialogue carry the story. Locations are few and instantly readable (an office, a mansion, a wedding, a hotel kitchen), and the plot moves through direct confrontation rather than long setup.
The tropes you will meet
Short dramas trade on strong, immediate emotions. A handful of storylines come back again and again:

If this sounds like soap opera and romance fiction, it is, just compressed into a much faster format.
How short drama apps make money
Almost every app follows the same model, as described in their official store listings:
- Free opening episodes. The first installments of each series cost nothing, to get you hooked.
- Coins. Later episodes are unlocked with a virtual currency bought through in-app purchases.
- Subscriptions. Alternatively, an auto-renewing subscription unlocks the catalog; ReelShort's listing, for example, mentions a weekly subscription.
- Ads and bonuses. Many apps offer free ways to keep going: ReelShort says that if you don't want to buy coins, you can still continue by watching ads or collecting daily bonuses.
Coin and subscription prices vary by country and change over time, so the reliable place to check them is inside the app, where they are shown before you pay. One tip applies to every app: subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel them in your App Store or Google Play settings, and deleting the app does not cancel them. How big the short drama market is
The most widely quoted figures come from Sensor Tower's "State of Short Drama Apps 2025" report, published in July 2025 [1]:
- in Q1 2025, short drama apps generated about $700 million in global in-app revenue, almost 4x Q1 2024;
- cumulative revenue had reached about $2.3 billion by March 2025;
- downloads topped 370 million in the same quarter (6.2x a year earlier), for a cumulative total of nearly 950 million;
- ReelShort earned $130 million in Q1 2025 ($490 million lifetime) and DramaBox $120 million ($450 million lifetime);
- the United States accounted for almost $350 million, 49% of global revenue.
Put simply, short dramas are no longer a social-media curiosity. They are a fast-growing app category whose money, for now, comes mostly from American viewers.
The best-known short drama apps
These are the main apps, with ratings as shown on the Italian App Store on September 30, 2026 [3] (ratings on other storefronts will differ). All of them offer a localized interface.

Watching short dramas in other languages
A translated interface is not the same as a translated series. The big apps localize their menus and descriptions, but most shows are American or Asian productions, and whether a given series is dubbed or only subtitled has to be checked title by title. The simplest test: watch the free first episode and look at the audio and subtitle options in the player before you spend anything.

AI-made short dramas
The newest development is short dramas made with artificial intelligence: images, voices and motion generated by AI rather than filmed on set. The upside is that a small team can set stories anywhere, in any language, without the cost of a film crew. The limit is just as clear: there are no real actors, and the result should be labeled as AI.
Our rule is transparency: viewers should always know when a series is AI-made, and the characters should be fictional.
